The population was 1,061 at the 2020 census. Holgate, formerly known as Kaufmanville, was platted in 1873 when the railroad was extended to that point and incorporated as a village in 1881. The village has the name of William Holgate, the original owner of the town site. A post office has been in operation since 1874.
