The lawsuit targeted Fulton County, a Democratic stronghold, seeking to stop it from opening election offices over the weekend to receive absentee ballots in person.

Republicans in the state had attempted to force historically Democratic counties to throw out absentee ballots.

A federal judge Tuesday scolded Republican Party attorneys for what he called a “frivolous” lawsuit that accused election officials in seven Georgia counties of breaking the law by letting voters hand-deliver their absentee ballots over the weekend.

The RNC and the state GOP requested an injunction, claiming that seven county election boards illegally accepted absentee ballots past the allowed time. They requested that ballots accepted after Friday be separated from the others.

A U.S. judge on Tuesday denied a bid by Republicans to block seven counties in the battleground state of Georgia from accepting some absentee ballots, and chided the party's lawyers for what he termed discrimination against political opponents.

Former assistant district attorney Phil Holloway on expecting more election legal challenges in Georgia and undated Pennsylvania mail-in ballots not being counted.

In order to accommodate the high number of advance voters, election officials in several Georgia counties, including at least one Republican-leaning county that was not named in the suit, kept offices open through the weekend to accept absentee ballots.
